I was the map owner for the Himmelsdorf rework in Tanks Blitz and developed the full level design concept, controlling the process from prototype to final release.
The rework focused on preserving the identity of the original map while improving gameplay timing, balance, route structure and combat variety. The map was slightly expanded to improve first-contact timing on the medium/light tank flank. I redesigned this flank around a bomb-damaged railway area with craters, giving players more terrain-based gameplay, maneuvering options and hull-down positions. The heavy tank flank was also reworked: the original version had two very similar corridors, so I kept the two-corridor structure but made them play differently through ruined castle walls, hills and distinct cover placement.
After the rework, the map became available for additional modes, including a larger-player-count mode where an extra mountain route to the castle opens up while remaining closed in standard modes. The reworked version became more balanced and was included in the esports map pool.
Design Goals:
- Preserve the recognizable identity of the original Himmelsdorf map
- Improve first-contact timing on the medium/light tank flank
- Add more terrain-based gameplay and hull-down opportunities
- Make the medium/light flank more dynamic through bomb-damaged railway terrain
- Diversify the heavy tank flank by making two corridors play differently
- Improve combat readability, route structure and positional variety
